How to Keep Your Drains Clog-Free

Keeping Your Drains Clear

undefined

A clogged drain can quickly turn into a plumbing nightmare. The good news is, you can typically prevent any issues with your drain by being careful about what goes down them. Here are some tips to try at home.

Use Baking Soda and Hot Water

In addition to helping perfect your favorite recipes, baking soda can be used to keep your drains clear. It's a great natural cleaning agent, which absorbs unpleasant odors and keeps your sink smelling fresh.

Throw a handful of baking soda into your drain, and then follow it with hot water.

Pour Vinegar Down the Drain

Vinegar is another great chemical-free cleaner and contains acetic acid which acts as a solvent. It can remove buildup on your pipes, helping to keep them clear.

Pour 1 cup of vinegar down your drains, and let it sit for a half-hour. Then, chase the vinegar down with very hot water. If your drain is still clogged, try adding baking soda and salt to the mix.

Be Mindful of What Goes Down the Drain

If you have a garbage disposal, it can be tempting to throw all of your food down your drain. However, cooking grease, coffee grounds, large bones, and other food products can damage your garbage disposal and clog your drain. Be sure to use a strainer in your kitchen sink.

In the bathroom, hair and soap scum can both lead to a backed-up drain. Be sure to clean your shower drain each time, and clean your shower often to prevent any issues.
